Bernard C. Becker, 97, of Martinsville, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at King’s Grant Retirement Community where he had been a resident since 2001. He was born in Cooperstown, New York on December 27, 1916 to John Pearson Becker and Mary Neale Becker. He was a graduate of Syracuse University where he received a degree in forestry. He moved to Martinsville in 1950 and was employed in the furniture industry in quality control, retiring from Hooker Furniture. Bernie was an avid trout fisherman, enjoyed wood working and repairing anything he could. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Smith-Hamilton Men’s Class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Gardner Becker; sisters, Dorris Weaver, Evelyn Glass, Mary Winnie, Bernice Becker and Serita Becker; brothers, Herbert and Marcus Becker.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn B. Antaramian and husband Grant of Glen Allen, VA, Mary B. Jones and husband Ron of Greensboro, NC; one son, Mark G. Becker of Boones Mill, VA; seven grandchildren, Meg Moran and husband Terry, Susan Antaramian, Russell and Adam Becker, Michael, Christopher and Graham Davis, two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Lucy Moran and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Monday, May 19, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at King’s Grant Victory Chapel with a reception to follow in the multi-purpose room at King’s Grant.
