Richard Frederick Viar, 89, of Madison Heights, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He was the husband of the late Lorine Wicker Viar.
Born March 10, 1923 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Thomas M. and Bessie Sublett Viar and was also preceded in death by four brothers, David B. Viar, Henry D. Viar, Thomas E. Viar, and John K. “Jack” Viar and four sisters, Nellie V. Overstreet, Ruby V. Creasy, Kathleen V. Moon, and Louise V. Mischo. Mr. Viar was retired from Wilson Heating & Air and was a U.S. Army veteran, where he served during World War II with the 698th Military Police Company in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.
Mr. Viar is survived by a niece he raised, Bessie Ann Viar Morris of Easton, MD; great-nieces, Angela Potthast and her husband Chris of Trappe, MD and Kandise Viar Powell and her husband Chris of Lynchburg; a great-nephew, Kendall E. Viar of Charlottesville and many other special nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Madison Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Todd Blake officiating. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
