David Eugene Merritt, 67, of Lynchburg passed away peacefully in his home on Friday October 17, 2014. Born in New London, CT. October 16, 1947, he was the son of the late Rev. Eugene Oliver Merritt and Catherine Shafer Merritt.
He is also survived by two sisters and two brothers: Esther Merritt Hurst and her husband Richard of Lynchburg, Vivian Merritt Young and her husband Grover of Thorsby AL., Mark Merritt and his wife Ellen of San Antonio Texas, and Stephen Merritt and his wife Shirley of Noank, CT.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family members.
David was a former draftsman at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and also worked at General Dynamics Electric Boat. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and served our country in the U.S. Navy with three tours of duty in Vietnam during The Vietnam War.
A memorial service with full military honors will be conducted by Chaplain Robert Cardwell Friday Oct. 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at The American Legion Post 16 Lodge at 1301 Greenview Dr. in Lynchburg. A reception will follow immediately at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 3015 Roundelay Rd. Lynchburg. Flowers may be sent to Whitten Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church or The John Lynch Chapter of NSDAR Veterans Committee.
