Alice Ashwell Hodges, 94, of Forest, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Virginia Baptist Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Calvin Thomas Hodges, Sr. for 65 years. Born on November 29, 1921 in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late Walker and Katie Ashwell.
Alice was a lifetime member of Lebanon United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the women’s club and Sunday School. She retired as a caregiver from Community Sitters. Alice enjoyed flowers and being able to take care of her family. She never knew a stranger and enjoyed talking, meeting, and helping others. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill” Ashwell.
Alice is survived by her children, Barbara Puryear and husband, Joe, Jeanette Pickrel and husband, Freddie, Calvin “Tommy” Hodges, Jr. and wife, Louise, and Shirley Miear and husband, Ronnie; eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren; her sister, Virginia Abbott; and numerous other family members and church friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Shirley Miear. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 1, 2016 at Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
