Stephen D. Zimmerman passed away on October 8, 2021. He was born on August 7, 1942 in Indianapolis to Ralph E Zimmerman and Betty Marion (Schlereth) Zimmerman. He was preceded in death by Brother Bruce G. Zimmerman. Surviving is his wife of 54 years Sharon Marin Zimmerman and daughters Dawn Michele (Blake) Burnett of Plano, TX and Betsy Leigh Zimmerman of Indianapolis.
Stephen’s three granddaughters, Autumn (14), Addison (12) and Avery (8) also of Plano, TX.
Stephen was a 1960 graduate of Broad Ripple High School and ’64 graduate of Butler University. He played high school and college golf which led to membership of many years at The Country Club of Indianapolis and Broadmoor Country Club. One of his proudest golf activities was being a Co-founder of the great Secession Golf Club in Beaufort, SC. Stephen was a Life Member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Stephen’s business career stretched from Shearson Hamill in 1968 to the time of death with Fuhrmann Capital. The 50 plus year career included Prescott Ball & Turben, Fogle Sheridan and Smith Barney where he earned the position of Senior Vice President. Stephen was a Ruby Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League and served two terms as President of the Central Indiana Bridge Association while winning numerous Sectional and Regional bridge tournaments. Stephen served as President of the East Avalon Homeowners Association and later as Treasurer of the Royal Pines Homeowners Association. His Board memberships included the Spring Mill Lakes @ Tamarack, the Hann Museum of Indiana Art in Lafayette, Indiana and the Eiteljorg Museum of Native American and Western Art. On June 10th, 2005 the Stephen and Sharon Zimmerman Resource Center opened its doors as part of the Western Art Show and Sale, which catapulted him into national prominence as a collector and appraiser of western art.
Steve never missed an opportunity to enjoy all aspects of living. A zest for life and making things happen were hallmarks of his. He was an avid collector, including 3,500 art books that adorn his office library. Several of his extensive artwork collection form part of the Booth Western Art Museum’s permanent collection. An excellent conversationalist and raconteur, Steve’s contributions to the organizations and activities in which he participated made him a sought-after member, board participant, and leader. Above all, he was a wonderful, loving, husband and father, and will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Crown Hill Funeral Home with service immediately following at 12:00 PM, followed by burial at Crown Hill Cemetery.
