Robert Paul Shanahan

Robert (Bob) Paul Shanahan, age 69, passed away peacefully in the presence of several loving family members on August 10, 2021. He was born in Indianapolis to John and Alice Shanahan on March 15, 1952. He attended Little Flower Catholic grade school, Brebeuf Preparatory High School, and Marian College. He worked for Ryan Homes and Liberty Mutual Insurance for a few years before beginning his career with the IRS as a revenue agent. He retired from his supervisory position in 2008. Throughout his life, Bob made friends easily. To the day of his death, he retained friendships begun when he was still in grade school, and he kept gathering friends as he moved through school and into his various jobs. He was a welcome addition to any gathering or party. Bob and his wife Patti were involved in the lives of their twenty-one nieces and nephews. He had a knack for making each one feel that he or she was his favorite. Uncle Bob was also well known to their friends, who often adopted him as their uncle also. He spent untold hours attending their sporting events, school programs and extracurricular activities He teased them all, and playfully interrogated them about their activities, regularly obtaining more information than a parent could. Bob enjoyed sports, especially golf, baseball, football, and basketball. He was a season ticket holder to the Pacers, Indians and Colts for many years, and attended both the Super Bowl games in which the Colts participated. He grew up listening to the St. Louis Cardinals games on the radio, and enjoyed traveling to the Gateway city to see them play a couple of times each year. He was a regular attendee at the annual Old Oaken Bucket game, where he rooted for IU. He was also fortunate to attend the Masters Golf Tournament in 2017. Bob and Patti enjoyed traveling during their 40 years of marriage. They experienced many areas of the US, in addition to Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Trips to Florida during the Christmas season were generally made with several other members of the family. A visit to one of the Disney parks or Universal Studios was often an integral segment of the trip. After retirement, he and Patti became snowbirds, spending a few months on the east coast of Florida in the dead of winter. Bob was an active member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, where he volunteered his time for many years. Bob is survived by his wife, Patti, his sister, Pat Paas (Terry), brother, Gary (Kathi) Shanahan, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2021 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Feeney Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E. 71st Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220. An additional visitation will take place on Monday, August 16, 2021 at 10:00 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 4100 E. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220.
