Mary Margaret (Harvey) Rife, returned home to arms of her Lord on Friday, April 23rd, at the age of 87. She was born in Wabash, Indiana, to Garl and Margaret Irene Harvey on April 20, 1934. She married her high school sweetheart, William E Rife on May 22, 1955. Bill predeceased her on January 4, 1984. Together they had one daughter, Nancy, and a son, Scott (deceased shortly after premature birth).
Mary attended Purdue University for a year. She left school and went to work until Bill left the Navy. They married and began their life adventures together living in Des Plaines, IL, Findlay, OH, Geneva, Switzerland and eventually settling in Indianapolis, IN in 1969. Mary worked as the Financial Secretary at St Lukes United Methodist Church for many years. In her later years she worked at Mr. E’s Hallmark store. She was a faithful member of St Lukes UMC. She and Bill regularly attended Indiana Pacer games and were both fans of golf. In her last days, she made sure to watch The Masters and cheer on her favorite golfers.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, David Harvey. She is survived by her daughter Nancy, nieces Karen Halverson and Debbie Sailors (Wabash, IN), niece Barbara McLaughlin (VA), niece Brenda Harvey (OH) and nephew David Harvey, Jr (TN). She also leaves behind her beloved corgi, T. Tucker and favorite grandcat, Lexi (aka Tank). As an avid animal lover, she knows her menagerie will be waiting at the rainbow bridge for her as well.
There will be no funeral services. Private graveside services will be held on Tuesday, April 27th at 1:30p at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to one of Mary’s favorite organizations: the Indianapolis Humane Society or St Judes Children’s Hospital.
A special thank you to the staff of Traditions at North Willow who loved her and cared for her, notably Sarah Graves, who held a special place in her heart. And thank you to the staff of Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care. The family greatly appreciates your care and support during the last chapter of her story.
“When I’m Gone”
When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken;
Remember some good I have done
Forget that I ever had heartaches,
And remember I’ve had loads of fun.
Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way,
Remember I have fought hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day.
Then forget to grieve for my going;
I would not have you sad for a day
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay.
And come in the shade of the evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few minutes beside me,
And remember only my best.
