James Alan Hall, 69, of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018. Jim was born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 27, 1948 to Jack and Phyllis Hall. He attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa and received his PhD in social work from the University of Wisconsin. Jim spent his career teaching, counseling and researching adolescent medicine and substance abuse. He held faculty positions at the University of Washington, University of California San Diego, University of Iowa and was the Dean of Social Work at the University of Alabama. Most recently he was teaching and involved in grant research at IUPUI. As an active member of All Souls Unitarian Church he taught classes and served on the board. Jim was a social guy who lead a very active life. He has been an avid runner, an enthusiastic Iowa Hawkeye fan and he enjoyed traveling and experiencing new cultures and new cuisines. Most important to Jim were family ties, tops on that list was spending time with his daughter Katie. He is survived by his daughter Katherine Hall, his father, brothers Rick, Tom and Tim and his sister Sue Holten, three step daughters, one step son and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Phyllis Hall. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, September 8th at 2:00 at All Souls Unitarian Church 5805 East 56th Street. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the family, Unitarian Universalist Association of America, University of Wisconsin School of Social Work account for Sheldon D. Rose, or National Public Broadcasting.
