Dr. Neil Stephen Shamberg Ph.D., 84, of Montpeiler, Ohio, passed away on September 15, 2017, after a short battle with leukemia. He was born to the late Samuel and Sonya (Weiss) Shamberg in Chicago, Illinois, on October 4, 1932. After briefly studying law at Northwestern University, he switched his attention to the study of psychology and obtained an undergraduate degree there. He then attended graduate school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received his Ph.D. He studied for an additional three years at Case Western Reserve to earn his clinical degree thus becoming a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Years later he received a Bachelors degree in European History at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. During his 40+ year career, he developed two mental health agencies in Paulding and Van Wert, Ohio, where he helped thousands of people improve their mental health. In addition, he worked for the Ohio Bureau of Disability Determination in Columbus, Ohio, assisting individuals in receiving disability insurance. He also worked for the Indiana Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After receiving his degree in European History, he taught at a variety of universities both in the United States and Canada, in the disciplines of psychology, American History, and European History. At the last college he taught at, Trine University, in Angola, Indiana, he was honored to develop and teach The History of the Holocaust. He continued working up until the day he took ill. Neil is survived by his wife, Barbara (Sroufe) Shamberg; daughters, Ardyth (Ken) Shamberg-Sokoler of Sacramento, CA, Deb (Adam) Shamberg-Garland of Buffalo Grove, IL, and Alicia (Joe) Shamberg-Baxter of Sparks, NV; step-son, Jon Bowman of Fort Wayne, IN; step-daughter, Carla (Rick) Jordan of Fort Wayne, IN; 14 grandchildren; sister, Ruth (Charles) Provow of Highland Park, IL; and a host of family, friends, and colleagues. The funeral service will be on Friday, September 22, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home (420 W. Wayne Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46802) with visitation one hour prior with Rabbi Lenny Sarko officiating. Burial will follow at Lindenwood Cemetery (2324 W. Main Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46808). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of North America www.hsna.org.
