Ervin Clark Umber

Ervin Clark Umber, 91, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023, at Chateau Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Fort Wayne. He was born in Fort Wayne to the late Lester and Bertha (March) Umber. Ervin was a 1949 graduate of Elmhurst High School. In his younger years, he was one of the co-founders of Umber Ace Hardware in Waynedale. In addition to working at the hardware store, Ervin worked at General Electric for three and a half years and later went on to become a valued member of the Fort Wayne Newspaper, where he worked as a sales account executive in the advertising department. Ervin retired from the newspaper after 38 years of dedicated service. He served as an adult leader in the Boy Scouts for over 15 years. Ervin was said to have enjoyed working with his hands by working on his tractor, a motorcycle (of which he rode through his mid 60's), and being a steam engine hobbyist that built his own steam engine. He even had a lathe metalworking operation that he ran from his home basement. He was a devoted member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, and loved his dogs! Ervin was married to his wife, Marlene Jane (Carnall) Umber for 72 years before her passing in April of 2022. He is survived by his sons, Kerry (wife - Joann) Umber, and Ron Umber; grandchildren, Angie Schick, Ken Umber, Dan Umber, and Chris Umber; great-grandchildren, Alex Vegso, and Ian Schick; and a brother, Dwight Umber. In addition to his parents and wife Marlene, Ervin was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Umber; and a granddaughter, Alicia Umber. Funeral services for Ervin will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at 4:00 PM at Klaehn, Fahl, Melton Funeral Home, 6424 Winchester Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46819, with visitation being held from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM prior to the service.
