Charles E. 'Sonny' Shifflett

Charles Elwood Shifflett, 81, passed away peacefully on Thursday April 26, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Charles was born in Charlottesville, Virginia to the late Warner and Madie Shifflett on May 23, 1936. At a young age people began to call him Sonny and it stuck with him his whole life. He grew up a family man and carried that legacy on to his children and grandchildren. Sonny married the love of his life, Joyce Shifflett, and they enjoyed 40 beautiful years together before she passed away in 1996. Together Sonny and Joyce had five beautiful children. In the early 70s Sonny started his own concrete business, C.E. Shifflett, Inc. in Northern Virginia. Sonny would not have wanted it any other way because he was able to provide steady work and have his sons, brothers, and Joyce work with him daily to build a flourishing family business. After Sonny's wife, Joyce, passed away he continued to work hard on his business. He later met Alene, whom he would eventually marry. They spent the beginning of their 20 years full of laughter and love together in Northern Virginia. They moved to Pinellas Park, Florida after retiring the business. As Sonny's health declined he moved back to Virginia with his daughter so he could be with his children. Sonny leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife, Alene Shifflett; his children and step children, Charles E. (Chuck) Shifflett, Kenneth Shifflett (Sandra), Gary Shifflett (Norma), Pamela Auandee (Toy), Scott Shifflett (Kathy), Joann Martine (Bill), Darryl Kidd, Jennifer Wade (Chris); his adored 23 grandchildren and step grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren and step grandchildren; his loving brothers and sisters, Viola, Mertice, Warner Jr., and Donnie (Brenda); his great lifelong childhood and family friend, Geneva; and a host of other family members and friends. Services for Sonny will be held at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. A visitation for Charles will be held Monday, April 30, 2018 from 11 am to 12 pm followed by a celebration of life beginning at 12 pm. Sonny will be laid to rest with Joyce at National Memorial Park.
