Barbara S. Gillis, 80, of Fairfax, VA, passed away on December 17, 2023. She was born on April 7, 1943, in Johnstown, PA, to the late William and Laura Sweeney. Barbara was a dedicated paraeducator at Daniels Run Elementary School for over 15 years, where she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. Barbara was a woman of many talents and interests. She earned a B.A. in English from the College of Mary Washington and was a devoted Air Force wife for over 25 years, serving in leadership roles in Officer Wives Clubs and providing support to Air Force families. In her free time, she was an avid reader and sought out opportunities to learn about the world. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also participated in classes offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University. Barbara is survived by her sister, Kathie Sweeney, her daughter, Bridget (Gillis) Loft, son-in-law Andrew Loft, grandson, Ian Loft and son, Andy Gillis. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Laura Sweeney, as well as her uncle and aunt, Samuel and Frances Stouffer. Barbara's warm and witty nature will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her legacy as a committed educator and enthusiastic learner will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. A graveside service to celebrate Barbara's life will be held at the City of Fairfax cemetery at 1:00 on Thursday, December 28, 2023, followed by a reception at 1:30 at Demaine Funeral Home at 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Barbara's memory to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University (https://olligmu.augusoft.net//index.cfm?method=Donation.MakeDonation ).
