Larry Earl Gates

Larry E. Gates, 85, of Evansville, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Walnut Creek Nursing Home. He was born on February 27, 1938, in Evansville, Indiana to the late Earl Thomas and Dorothy (Baumgartner) Gates. Larry was a graduate of Central High School. He graduated from the University of Evansville where he played football as a Tight End earning him All-American honors and was inducted into the UE Hall of Fame. Larry worked for General Tire for over 35 years. He loved spending time on his houseboat with family. Larry was very creative, often making unique keepsakes for his family. He enjoyed having breakfast with friends, especially his football friends. Preceding him in death were his mother, father and stepfather Albert “Frosty” Crafton. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judith D. (Shaner) Gates; daughters, Andrea Reller (Todd) and Laurel Knapp; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, followed by a private service.
