John B. Schmitt, 73, of Evansville, IN passed away on Friday, July 14, 2023. He was born on June 21, 1950 in Bay City, MI to the late Robert J. and Dorothy (Carbeno) Schmitt.
John served in the US Army and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany where he was in the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus. He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in music from Chapman University and earned his Master’s in music from Butler University. John served as the choir director for the Germania Maennerchor, St. Paul’s UCC German Township and Bethlehem UCC. He worked as an adjunct Professor of Music History at USI, taught music at several high schools in the state of Indiana, and spent almost his entire career as manager of H & H Music. Music was John’s passion and he was a vocalist that sang at many services and weddings through the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jim Schmitt.
John is survived by his wife of 21 years, Gerri “Grace” Schmitt; daughter, Jondi Soper (Jeremy); son, Adam Schmitt (Emily); grandchildren, Katie Schmitt, Oliver Schmitt and Henry Schmitt; brother, Bill Schmitt (Cedric); and sister, Carol Melon (Bob).
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, officiated by Rev. Emily Slade. Friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem UCC Music and Choral Program.
