Diane Elise Dickson, Newburgh, Indiana May 23, 1945 – June 24, 2024 “Get your education because no one can ever take it away from you.” A lifelong learner, a fiercely independent woman, a strong mother, and a devoted friend – if you knew Diane Dickson, you were fortunate. She left an indelible mark on our lives and in our hearts until her heart could give no more. At just 79 years of age, her departure came as a great shock, leaving us with a deep wound. Diane Elise was born in Clinton, Indiana, to Alice, an educator, and Lyle Marshall, a supervisor with DuPont. Her father’s job moved the family to Sellersburg, Indiana, where Diane spent most of her formative years. Her childhood - filled with laughter, family vacations, picnics, and a loving home - provided a foundation that instilled in her the courage to always follow her convictions. A class officer and active student, Diane graduated from Silver Creek High School before attending the University of Evansville. Diane initially wanted to be a doctor, but in the mid-1960s, societal expectations led her towards nursing. Realizing that nursing didn't quite satisfy her medical passion, she pivoted to secondary education with a focus on health, earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Evansville. Diane thrived on reinventing her career. After moving on from teaching, she became the director of membership for the Petroleum Club in Evansville while also teaching wine-tasting classes at the University of Evansville. Diane’s thirst for knowledge led her to courses in emergency care, becoming a certified emergency medical technician, and even helping to establish the 9-1-1 system in Evansville. She later became intrigued by the career of one of the Club’s members and decided to learn that business – promotional marketing. Within a few years, Diane started her own promotional marketing business, Premiums Plus, which she successfully ran for 20 years until she retired in 2014. Retirement was the perfect opportunity for Diane and her late best friend, Sharon Duell, to hit the road. They fondly dubbed their adventures “Thelma and Louise” trips, never quite knowing where they’d end up but always sure it would be an unforgettable journey. From zip-lining in Costa Rica to visiting wineries in Vermont to exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota, each trip was brimming with treasured experiences and lifelong memories. Though a few years apart, both Diane and Sharon passed away at the age of 79. We can only imagine how they’ve now taken to the open road, writing their own endless story and letting their spirits run free. But Diane would be the first to tell you, the heart and soul of her existence was her daughter, Breck, and her granddaughter, Elyse. Diane took great joy in either living vicariously through Breck and Elyse’s adventures – or experiencing them together. One of their fondest memories was when Diane and Breck served as volunteers for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. Diane absolutely loved the Olympics, and those three weeks together were among her most cherished experiences. Diane was at Breck’s side when Elyse was born and spent as much time with them as she could, including a three-generation trip to Disney World. Without a doubt, Diane’s spunk and resolute spirit live on through Breck and Elyse. The character-building lessons passed on from her parents served Diane well throughout her life. She relished doing things for others – often without their knowing. From paying overdue lunch accounts at a local school to buying meals for strangers to donating gas cards to veterans, Diane firmly believed that while sharing is good, giving is better. She served on the board of directors for Albion Fellows Bacon Center for 14 years and was a longtime volunteer for Santa Clothes Club. Diane had an insatiable love for reading, a testament to her lifelong dedication to learning and growth. She was a perfect mix of wit, wisdom, and warmth – and, if you were lucky, you got see a glimpse of Diane’s feisty side. Left to treasure the love and memories of this amazing woman are her daughter, Breck Thomas-Ross, and granddaughter, Elyse Ross, both of Louisville, Ky; nephew Chris Johnson (Imel) of Jacksonville, Fl; as well as cousins and dear friends. Diane’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Eykamp Hall on the campus of the University of Evansville.
