Susan Parrish Garrett (née Jackson), 84, of Charlottesville, died peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2016. Born April 10, 1931, she was the daughter of Alice Benedict and Tony Jackson. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, she married George Palmer Garrett, Jr. in 1952, whose career as a professor of English and creative writing brought them to Charlottesville in 1984. By that time Susan had been a hospital administrator in York, Maine and Ann Arbor, Michigan. She continued her career here at Martha Jefferson Hospital until her retirement in 1988, after which she devoted the rest of her life to extensive volunteer work in Charlottesville, mainly with JABA, the University of Virginia Hospital, and Region Ten, where she served on the board for many years. During these years she wrote and published three books: two about health care policy and a memoir. Susan was active in her church, St. Paul’s Memorial, and had many friends in the Charlottesville area. Those who knew her will miss her gentle smile and sweet temper. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years. She is survived by three children, William Garrett, George Gorham Garrett, and Alice Garrett; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Garrett and Ruth Garrett. The family wishes to offer a special thanks to the staff at Rosewood Village. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at St Paul’s Memorial Episcopal Church in Charlottesville. Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to The Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle or to a local charity of your choice.
