Billy W. Sweeney passed away peacefully October 26, 2022 at his brother’s home in Staunton. Billy was born in Covington, Va. on August 12, 1954 to the late Melvin Jake and Loretta F. Sweeney.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two beloved wives, Colleen A. Sweeney; May 2006 and Jenny P. Sweeney; November 2013 and brother Ronald P.L. Sweeney.
Billy is survived by his brother Melvin E. Sweeney and wife Patsy A. Sweeney of Staunton, their two children, Kailey Sweeney of Richmond, Shawn Sweeney and wife Heidi of Staunton; two nieces Raven, Hannah and nephew Noah Sweeney.
Billy attended Wilson Memorial High School and received his college degree in Jamestown, New York. He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1973 and served four years active duty and then Marine Corp Reserve until 1979. Billy had a tremendous appreciation for the Armed Forces of the United States. He cherished the many motorcycle trips to Myrtle Beach, N.C., Daytona Beach Fla, and the world’s largest single day motorcycle event Rolling Thunder Run in Washington, D.C. with his brother and many friends. Billy was an accomplished musician. His favorite instrument was the Acoustic Guitar Dobro. He played Bluegrass music with his special friends four to five nights a week for many years. Billy worked 35 years at Northrop Grumman/Sperry Marine in Charlottesville. Next to playing the Dobro; his family; his position at Northrop Grumman was his life. He was on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Billy loved his challenging career and the many close friends and colleagues at work.
RIP my Marine brother and best friend.
Funeral Services will be held for family and friends at 1 P.M. Sunday November 6th at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, Va. In lieu of flowers, you may wish to consider a gift to the Wounded Warrior Projects.
