James Peter (J.P.) Barbour Jr, 91, of Collinsville went to be with our Lord, Sunday, March 2, 2014. Some of you called him J.P., his grandchildren and great grandchildren called him Papa B, Great Papa B, and Pop Pop but his wife called him Jim.
He was born in Patrick County, September 13, 1922 to James Peter Barbour, Sr. and Vada Pendleton Barbour.
He served in the Army during World War II as a Medic with Battles and Campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
He is a Charter Member of Valley Drive Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher.
He was a retired US Postal worker where he worked for 33 years and was a member of NARFE where he served as secretary.
J.P. was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marie Dillon Barbour and a son, Michael Lane Barbour.
He is survived by three sons and their wives, Donald L. and Kay W. Barbour, Stephen L. and Venetia S. Barbour, Kenneth L. and Andrea R. Barbour; daughter-in-law, Mary B. Barbour; a brother, Buford (Butch) and Myra Barbour; ten grandchildren, Timothy A. Burgess, Tracy L. Waddell (Tami), Dennis E. Waddell (Connie), Chris Barbour, Paige Barbour Canada (Ryan), Caleb, Leslie Grace, Asa and Daniel Barbour and Daniel Smith. Seven great-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Alexis, Hunter, Hannah, Trisha and Travis Waddell and Chloe Canada, and one furry companion and friend, Sandy.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett, VA., with the Rev. Bobby Rakes officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park with full military honors.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home and other times at the home of Don and Kay Barbour in Fieldale, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 1081 Spruce Street, Martinsville, VA 24112.
