Bertha Gates Turner, 80, of 3705 Stones Diary Road, Bassett, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Saturday, March 9, 2013 after a three years battle with Leukemia. She was born in Phoenix City, Alabama, on May 21, 1932 to the late Jessie C. Gates and Zila C. Gates. After she retired from Bassett Furniture Industries, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed quilting when time permitted.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty one years, Jack L. Turner and now they are reunited in heaven. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice G. Baker and Sara G. Somonskie, and one brother, Tillman C. Gates all of Phoenix City, Alabama,
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and James S. Semones, of Rocky Mount, VA, son and daughter-in-law, Michael L. and Neki C. Turner of Bassett, V.A., four grandchildren, Leslie S. Hodges, Thomas E. Semones, Austin L. Turner and Hailey R. Turner, two great-grandchildren, Gavin H. Hodges and Creed G. Hodges, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:A.M. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Blackberry Baptist Church with Pastor Eric Kieselbach officiating, interment will follow in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8:00 P.M. Monday, March 11, 2013 in the Collins Funeral Home Chapel of Bassett, Virginia and other times at the home on the Stones Diary Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Blackberry Baptist Church General Church Fund, 3241 Stones Diary Road, Bassett, VA. 24055.
