James William Smith Jr.

SMITH, James William, Jr., 90, of Ashland, died on June 24, 2016. Mr. Smith was the son of the late James W. Smith, Sr. and Margaret Miller Smith and was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Leon Smith and sisters, Virginia Smith Taylor and Gail Smith Wood. He is survived by his devoted wife, Eleanor Attkisson Smith; children, James William Smith, III (Ruth), Kathryn Smith Cheesman (Paul); grandchildren, Courtney Smith Morgan (Brian), Ashley Smith Higginson (Todd), Jason Wayne Smith (Glynda), Robert Travis Smith (Sarah), Andrew Durham Smith (Cameron), Paul Cheesman (Heather), Debbie Doyle (Jim), and Alison Ward (Michael); great-grandchildren, Kyle and Natalie Higginson, Logan and Liam Smith, Emerson, Sadie, and Macey Smith, Hayden and Campbell Smith, Alex and Brandon Cheesman, Hunter and Peyton Doyle, and Michaela and Watts Ward; sister, Margaret Smith Burch (Jack). Mr. Smith retired from Electrical Equipment Co. in Richmond, VA as a Vice President after 42 years of service. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. He was a former member of the Hanover County Planning Commission, Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Ashland with 61 years of perfect attendance, and he was a member of First Baptist Church-Ashland, serving in numerous capacities, including Chairman of Deacons. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 1:30 pm at First Baptist Church- Ashland, 800 Thompson Street, Ashland, VA 23005, with the family receiving friends an hour prior. A reception will follow. Private interment will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ashland, VA.
