J. Gregory Ballentine, age 75, of Arlington, Virginia, passed away suddenly of a pulmonary embolism on March 21st, 2024. Greg is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Bess, his two daughters Greta (Gary Henry) and Dorothy (John Sneider), four grandchildren, Katarina, Alix, Kori, and Jack, his sister, Barbara Sinnott (John), and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a younger brother, Christopher V. Ballentine.
Greg was born in Buffalo, NY, to Richard and Maryalice Ballentine and grew up from an early age in Montevallo, AL. He went to high school at Indian Springs School in Birmingham, AL, earned his bachelor’s degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, and a PhD in economics from Rice University in Houston, TX. He and Bess, high school sweethearts, were married at the age of 19 in Alabama. They shared many years of deep devotion and celebrated their golden 50th anniversary with their immediate family just a few years ago.
Over a long career, Greg was an associate professor of economics at Wayne State University and the University of Florida, served the United States government in the Treasury Department and Office of Management and Budget, and was a principal at large firms such as KPMG and PWC before moving on to economic consulting at Bates, White & Ballentine and The Ballentine Barbera Group. Greg was a prominent economic litigation consultant for some of the country’s leading law firms and was chosen by Euromoney and International Tax Review as a “World’s Leading Transfer Pricing Adviser.”
Even with a busy career, Greg was always present for and devoted to his family and friends. The family regularly took skiing trips out west and often visited with extended family in the southern states. He and Bess took time to travel by themselves and with family after he retired. Greg was fond of the outdoors, and his daughters remember well the frequent “nature walks” they went on in their youth and how he enjoyed birdwatching. In recent years, he was also able to take time for golf, tennis, and bridge with friends locally.
Greg’s indefatigable affection for his family and particular attention to his children, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces is demonstrative of his deep concern and caring for youth. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations to UNICEF (https://www.unicefusa.org/) or to other charitable organizations that support the welfare of children.
A memorial service will be held on May 21, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Church of the Covenant in Arlington. Address: 2666 Military Road, Arlington, Virginia 22207.
