Nécrologie de Carlton Constant Brose Jr.
Carlton C. Brose Jr., 94, loving husband to Nancy Harris Brose, died Tuesday, August 27, 2024 in Arlington, VA surrounded and cared for by his family. Carlton C. Brose, Jr. was born June 5, 1930, son of Carlton C. Brose and Lillian Clayton Brose, in Bronxville, NY. Carlton and Nancy moved from Riverside, CT to Amherst, MA in 1972 and lived there until moving to Arlington, VA in 2019. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, served as a major in the Air Force, and worked in technology before joining Andy Sinauer to form Sinauer Associates Publishing (recently sold to the Oxford University Press). Carlton is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy, as well as his children Christina Morton and husband Kenny, Margarita (Ari) Brose, and Eric Brose and wife Jan Seymour. A devoted and loving grandfather to Chelsea Espinoza and husband Jorge, Nathan Morton, and Ned Brose, and great grandfather to Cecilia Constance (CeCe). He was predeceased by his sister Connie. Carlton lived a rich life with love and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He committed to continue the family traditions of his extended Brose family, and was the bearer of that mantle. He brought a smile and purpose to that, as well as to his many community groups in Amherst: First Church, Rotary, Town Meeting, the Valley Light Opera, his Men’s group, Hampshire Choral Society, “The Legends” at Amherst Golf Club and his tennis partners. In Arlington, Carlton quickly became active in the Arlington Rotary, even volunteering as Secretary; he also found a religious home at Rock Spring UCC. He will be remembered as well for his sharp mind and extensive vocabulary, and coincident Scrabble prowess; for his positive approach toward life, that he celebrated each day; his commitment to and support for the groups, clubs and teams he joined; his positive competitive spirit; his involvement and belief in our enduring democratic political process and our voting rights; and his hope for the health of the earth and our environment for generations to come. We will all miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 12th at 2:00 PM at Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ, 5010 Little Falls Road, Arlington, VA 22207. Reception to immediately follow. Please consider a gift in Carlton’s name to either The Rotary Club of Amherst, P.O. Box 542, Amherst, MA 01004-0542, or Arlington at http://arlingtonrotaryclub.org/donate
