Gerald “Gerry” Francis Egan June 22, 1945 - September 20, 2024 Gerald “Gerry" Francis Egan of Old Town, Alexandria, VA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, September 20, 2024. He was born and grew up in Holyoke, MA to the late Maurice and Bridget (Buckley) Egan. Gerry graduated from St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) and Suffolk Law School (Boston, MA). He is a Veteran of the Vietnam War, 1st Cavalry and 173rd Airborne. He was awarded with a Combat Infantryman's Badge, Air Medal and Bronze Star Medal. Gerry worked in Legal Publishing for the Bureau of National Affairs Inc. (BNA) in Washington D.C. He served on the Board of Directors of BNA and Pike & Fischer. After retirement from BNA, he worked for the Federal Government as the Business Manager for the Federal Government Publishing Office, retiring in 2022. He was proud of his collaborative work with the Department of Homeland Security to help develop the Trusted Traveler Program. His jobs awarded him many opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Gerry is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Gray) Egan of 52 years, his daughter Kathryn (Egan) Brown (Randy) of Fairfax, VA and his two sons, Patrick Egan (Maria) and Timothy Egan (Sarah) of Alexandria, VA and six beloved grandchildren: Ashlyn, Connor, Isabella, Madeline, Liam and Carson; his brother Dennis Egan (Barbara), his sister Kathy Curley and brother Maurice Egan (Maureen) and brother-in-law Frank Moynihan. He is preceded in death by his parents Maurice F. Egan and Bridget A. Egan (Buckley); his sisters Maureen Feeney (Egan) and Patricia Moynihan (Egan); his brother in laws Daniel Feeney (Maureen Egan) and William Curley (Kathy Curley). Gerry enjoyed spending time at his home on Nantucket, MA sharing many memories with friends and family. He never forgot his humble beginnings and was always willing to offer a helping hand to anyone. Gerry had a strong work ethic, treated everyone he came across with kindness and respect, and always celebrated the success of others. Gerry valued his many loyal and longtime friendships. He found joy and delight in the frequent get-togethers with his children and grandchildren who fondly called him "Pops". He was proud of his Irish-Catholic family including his five siblings, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. As a first generation American he cherished his trips to Ireland to visit family. Gerry will be missed by many, but we will hold onto memories of his warm and inviting nature and countless moments of laughter, conversation and storytelling. A visitation for Gerry will be held on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 4pm-7pm at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3513 N Street, NW, Washington DC 20007. Reception to follow.
