Fred Calvin Alexander, Jr. died suddenly at his home in Alexandria, VA on May 9.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Janet Lee Alexander; children F. Mitchell Alexander (Libba) of Enterprise, AL; Mary Alexander Richardson of Springfield, VA; Marjorie Donovan (Mike) of San Jose, CA; Margaret “Meg” Alexander (John Hirsch) of Concord, MA; step-children John “Chip” Beveridge (Colleen) of Annandale, VA and Brian Beveridge (Courtney) of Clifton, VA; siblings William W. Alexander of Hendersonville, NC; Markham Alexander of Atlanta, GA; Richard "Tigger" Alexander of Charlotte, NC; and Benjamin Alexander of Pittsburgh, PA. Fred’s treasured grandchildren are Anne Donovan, Mark Alexander, Michael Donovan (Susan), Will Richardson, Christopher Beveridge, Samuel Richardson, Elisabeth "Beth" Alexander, Jack Beveridge, Austin Beveridge, Davis Beveridge, Connor Beveridge, Lucy Hirsch and Eliza Hirsch. Fred also had many special cousins, nieces and nephews. His first marriage, in 1957, to the former Mary Betsy Jones ended in divorce.
Fred was born Nov 4, 1931, in Abingdon, VA. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1954 with a degree in philosophy. Following 2 years in the US Army serving in Busan, Korea, Fred returned to UVA where he earned his law degree in 1959. Fred began his legal career in Alexandria, VA with the law firm of Boothe, Dudley, Koontz, Blankenship and Stump. He enjoyed a long and successful tenure there until his retirement in 1996, by which time the firm was known as McGuire, Woods, Battle and Boothe. He was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1983.
As a longtime member of the Belle Haven Country Club, Fred was an avid tennis player and golfer. In recent years, he enjoyed spending his Friday afternoons playing poker at the Club with his good friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, June 12, at 11 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Fred’s life.
