History

Founded in 1969, Inverness Funeral Home (formerly Rod MacDonald Funeral Home) is the oldest funeral home in the Western Cape Breton area. Nearly 50 years ago, Rod A. MacDonald opened the funeral home—the first of its kind in Inverness—in the former Canada Post building. He relocated his namesake business to the MacMillan homestead on MacIsaac Street in the early 1970s; soon after, he moved it again to its present location at 45 MacIssac St., the former site of the Holy Family Convent High School.

Bernie MacDougall began working with Ron in 1975. Together they ran Rod MacDonald Funeral Home until February 1982, when Sydney funeral director Leo J. Curry—who owned T.W. Curry Funeral Home in Sydney—purchased the business and renamed it Inverness Funeral Home.
