À propos
Schimunek Funeral Home in Nottingham, Maryland, has provided funeral and cremation services for Baltimore County families since 1972. As a non-denominational funeral home, we work with families of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. We respect any family traditions or religious customs you want to incorporate into a memorial or funeral service.
Let’s celebrate life
Every person’s life is unique. At Schimunek Funeral Home, we specialize in creating one-of-a-kind tributes that celebrate all of the things that make a loved one special. Perhaps he was Baltimore’s No. 1 Ravens fan. We can deck out one of our event spaces in purple, black and gold, and give guests customized football jerseys as keepsakes. Did she make the best Smith Island Cake with layers upon layers of chocolate frosting? We can arrange to have it served at a catered reception. With a little inspiration, we can design a celebration that makes a big impact.
Customizable event spaces
Like most Baltimore-area funeral homes, Schimunek Funeral Home does not have a chapel. Instead, we have several rooms in the funeral home that can accommodate groups of varying sizes. Recently renovated, the spaces are modern, fresh and comfortable, with soft neutral colors, plush furniture and artwork by local artists. There are also flat-screen TVs for playing a video tribute (which we can help you create), or if the O’s are playing during the reception, we can have the game on for fans.
The Premier Room is ideal for Life Well Celebrated® services. It accommodate 80-100 guests and has round tables with chairs for seating to encourage family and friends to share stories and memories of the loved one being celebrated.
For visitations and smaller services, the Standard Room is a lovely space. The venue accommodates 50-60 and has traditional living room decor with oversized chairs and comfortable couches. We’ll bring in chapel-style chairs for the viewing.
If you wish to have a reception before or after the service, the Celebration Room, which accommodates 65+ guests, is the perfect place. With our professional catering service, we take care of the food and drink so you don’t have to worry about it in your time of need. We can do anything from light appetizers to a full sit-down dinner with waiter service.

We honor veterans
Schimunek Funeral Home understands the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families. As a Level One Founding Community Partner with We Honor Veterans, our staff is knowledgeable in the benefits available to veterans and their families. With respect, integrity and dignity, we will walk you through the steps of creating a veteran's memorial service that truly honors the life and sacrifice of your loved one.
It is our honor to provide funeral services to the brave men and women who defend our freedom. The team at Schimunek Funeral Home works with all branches of the U.S. armed services to conduct military funeral honors for veterans and members of the military. And, of course, our funeral directors are well-versed in helping clients apply for military benefits.
We believe that all veterans—no matter their financial situations—deserve dignified funerals and burials that pay tribute to their lives. That is why we participate in the Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans Burial Program. Working with local and national veterans’ groups, we provide no-cost funeral services for veterans who have fallen on hard times.
We care about Baltimore County
Our service to Nottingham and the surrounding Baltimore County community doesn’t end after a funeral. The team at Schimunek Funeral Home is involved in business associations, church activities and the Knights of Columbus.
We also host a holiday memorial service in December as a way to bring peace and comfort to those living through their first holiday season without a loved one. During the service, we provide light refreshments and attendees decorate a tree with ornaments as we call out the names of the loved ones who have passed. The room is decorated with poinsettias, which attendees are welcome to take home. All members of the community are invited to join us.
History
Undertaker Charles E. Schimunek founded the original Schimunek Funeral Home in 1937 in a northeast Baltimore rowhouse at the intersection of Madison and Luzerne Streets. The neighborhood at that time was very diverse, and Charles concentrated much of his business around the Bohemian traditions. As the business flourished, Charles found the need to expand the business and opened a 2nd location in 1957 on Brehms Lane (the funeral home is no longer part of the Schimunek firm).
The funeral firm expands north
As families moved out of Baltimore northward along the I-95 and Belair Road corridors, Charles realized he needed to move the family and the firm north too. He decided to open a 3rd location in the spring of 1972 at 9705 Belair Road in Nottingham. Shortly thereafter, the original location at Madison Street closed. Charles died in the fall of 1978 and was succeeded in business by his wife, Rita, a licensed funeral director. She has since passed away.
In the late '90s, the firm opened another location in Bel Air on West McPhail Road.
Decades of service
With more than 80 years of service, the Schimunek Funeral Home firm has assisted several generations of Baltimore-area families and stands ready to serve many more.
