Personalized funeral and memorial services

Reception room at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home and CemeteryOur focus at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home is to go above and beyond to create truly personalized funeral and memorial services. In short, we celebrate life. This means different things for different people, but for us it always entails discovering what a person loved, such as a treasured poem, favourite colour or lifelong hobby, and then incorporating those elements into a service with exquisite attention to detail.

What might your loved one's memorial look like? For a motorcycle enthusiast we might plan a processional of bikes. For an artist, we can arrange an art show. We surprised a family with a meal served on their mom’s favorite dishware, complete with the tomato juice she poured every Sunday. Whatever a person’s passions, we make it a point to showcase the things that someone cared about.

Cremation services

We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways, and families love our transparent pricing. With expertise in scattering ashes and a friendly team who pays attention to every detail, we provide service that is second to none.

More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with the many options:

  • a cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind.
  • a funeral with your loved one present, followed by cremation.
  • a cremation followed by a scattering, cemetery memorialization or celebration of life—or all three.

For those who wish for a more momentous memorial, Neptune Memorial Reef is an underwater cremation garden off the coast of Florida. A Celestis Memorial Spaceflight takes ashes into space for a little while or forever.

There are many options for cremation—and they're not all equal. Here's what you can expect when you choose us for your loved one's cremation:

  • Custody of care guaranteed. Our custody-of-care program helps safeguard the identification of your loved one from the time we bring them into our care until the time we return them to your family. We check, cross-check and check again, every step of the way.
  • Exclusive custody of your loved one. We use only crematories owned and operated by Dignity Memorial® providers or trusted partners. Once your loved one is in our custody or that of a trusted partner, they’re in our care until they’re returned to your family.
  • Licensed, certified, conscientious staff. All Dignity Memorial crematory operators are licensed and certified by Cremation Association of North America, or CANA. Only one person at a time is cremated, and the cremation chamber is thoroughly cleaned before the next person is cremated.

History

Cemetery grounds at Thomson In The Park CemeteryWhat is now Thomson in the Park Cemetery was founded in 1953 on 34 acres of farmland in Fort Garry.

During the 1950s, Winnipeg's Smith family ran multiple cemeteries in the city, including Elmwood Cemetery. The Smiths eventually sold this cemetery, then called Garry Memorial Park, to the city of Fort Garry. The cemetery became synonymous with quality and grew to become a respected part of the community.

Construction on the funeral home began in 2002. It opened in 2003 to meet the funeral and cremation needs of Winnipeg and surrounding communities.

Joining Thomson

In the early 2000s, Garry Memorial Park and the funeral home joined with the oldest funeral business in the city, Thomson. Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery carry on a deep tradition of unparalleled service established under the Thomson name.

Evolving services for changing times

Through the years, our commitment has always been to help Winnipeg-area families through one of the most personal and challenging stages of life. We understand the death of a loved one is an emotional and difficult experience. That’s why the funeral home and memorial park work together to provide compassionate, professional and personal services.

Volunteer work and community involvement

The Thomson In the Park teams regularly donate their time to nonprofit organizations and charities. We are involved with the Canadian Diabetes Association. Each year, we volunteer to help with its 10K run, and we provide the facilities for its annual gala that raises money for diabetes research. People on our teams sit on the boards of the Arthritis Society of Canada and the Lions Club South Winnipeg. Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery are also involved with the Canadian Association of Retired People.
