Personalized monuments and markers

As an added benefit to the families we serve, we partner closely with Birkmeier & Sons Monument Company. Since 1880, the family-owned monument company has helped Fort Wayne families discover, create and customize monuments that commemorate the lives of loved ones in unique and memorable ways. They offer a wide variety of memorialization options, including bronze markers, mausoleums, benches, uprights and flat markers.

Decades of Tradition

Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals is steeped in rich tradition and history. Abner S. Elzey personally named the Waynedale, Indiana, community back in 1921, and the Elzey family’s ties to the funeral business began long before that.

Early history

In 1895, Abner—an ordained minister of the Methodist church—and his wife, Sarah Ellen Linn Elzey, purchased the funeral home business of Thurber and Salisbury in Ossian, Indiana. Abner and Sarah’s son Dale became a partner in the business in 1916, and the name became Elzey and Son. Ilow Elzey—daughter of Abner and Sarah—was also employed by the funeral home.

In the late 1930s, we opened a funeral home in Waynedale on Old Trail Road under the same name. Abner W. Elzey, a grandson of Abner S. and Sarah, was part of the business from 1934-1959. Robert L. Dickey joined the firm in 1951, followed by Robert L. Haggard in 1959. In 1975, the name changed to Elzey-Dickey-Haggard Funeral Home.

Later years

John Patterson became a funeral home associate in 1966 and Thomas Rodak in 1976. Both became partners in the late 1970s, and the business became known as Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals. Both partners are still involved as consultants.
