Located on 4th Street Northwest, the funeral home is just a 20-minute drive from Calgary International Airport, with a public transit stop near our front entrance. The chapel's exit leading to our climate-controlled concourse provides comfortable funeral vehicle access throughout the year. The entire building is wheelchair accessible.

The chapel and fireside lounge

Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium has a distinctly warm and comforting environment. Our 23,500-square-foot Tudor-style building includes one of the larger funeral chapels in Calgary. It seats 250 people and has lovely 16-foot stained-glass windows that span floor to ceiling. The chapel features oak pews and a cathedral-style ceiling, creating excellent acoustics. Families have a choice of organ or digital grand piano for musical accompaniment.

Whether gathering for visitations, as a family before a service or for a reception, our fireside lounge is a warm, comfortable place to meet. Central to the room is a floor-to-ceiling fieldstone fireplace.

On-site crematory and convenient cemetery

Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium is located directly across from Queen’s Park Cemetery. We’re experienced at coordinating burial needs with this cemetery and others throughout Calgary and the surrounding area. For families choosing cremation, we have an on-site crematorium.

Asian services and burning room

Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium is specially equipped for services for Asian and Buddhist families. A room with a fireplace is conveniently located adjacent to our chapel to accommodate traditional burning ceremonies with the maximum safety and comfort.

Our team has extensive experience in planning ceremonies according to Chinese traditions as well. Even for Canadians who are 2nd- and 3rd-generation Chinese, we can offer guidance in traditional customs. If your family members speak only Chinese, let us know and we can bring in someone who speaks fluent Chinese.

Community involvement and events

At Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium, we are committed to helping others and take great pride in giving back to our community. Every year we host our Easter Egg Hunt, Children’s Costume Party and Stampede Barbeque. We support local charities through our annual Charity Garage Sale as well as other events.

We also take great pride in offering our annual Christmas Candlelight Memorial Service to families we have served throughout the year and anyone in the community who wishes to attend.

History

The founder of what is now Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium was Cy Foster. He opened his original funeral home on 16th Avenue Northwest in Calgary, under the name Foster’s Garden Chapel on a freezing December 3, 1956. He had 7 calls that first month, 15 the next and 300 by the end of the first year.

The funeral home business grows

Over the years, Cy partnered with the Gooder Brothers to open 2 other funeral homes: Cy Foster-Gooder’s Chapel on the Hill (located at 1708 16th Ave. NW) and Cy Foster-Gooder Hillside Chapel (located at 1635 17th Ave. SW).

In the 1980s, Foster's decided to open a new funeral home that would be an amalgamation of the 3 original funeral homes. Construction at our present location, across from Queen’s Park Cemetery, began in 1988. The new Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium opened on July 27, 1989.
