Evelyn Janet Smith

Evelyn J. Smith, age 101, of Fremont, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Lakeland Nursing Center, Angola, Indiana. Evelyn was born on March 19, 1914 in Angola, Indiana, the daughter of Cort and Jenny (Hanna) Kemmerling, they preceded her in death. She graduated from Angola High School in 1932. She married Virgil K. Smith, on October 19, 1933, and he preceded her in death on October 30, 1977. She led a very active life, she grew up living on a farm, she did housekeeping for several motels at Clear Lake, and worked at the Gamble’s store in Fremont. Evelyn and her husband Virgil raised their family in Fremont, and she was always busy in the family household blending family life with community involvement and memberships with the Rebecca’s and Pythian Sisters, and she attended several church’s and helped with senior citizen meals in Fremont. She managed the Fremont Council on Aging for many years. She was a 4-H leader and belonged to several home economics clubs. Survivors include, two daughters, Phyllis (Vernon) Strang of Fremont, Indiana, and Janet (Leroy) Siegel of Fremont, Indiana, eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great-grandchildren, a sister, Betty Shultz of Angola, Indiana, and a sister-in-law, Doris Smith of Angola, Indiana. Calling hours will be held from 6-8 pm Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana. Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday April 22, 2015 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana, with Rev. Darold Beck officiating. Burial will be at Fremont Cemetery, Fremont, Indiana.
