Obituary of Richard Blizzard
Richard Blizzard, 79, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at his home. He was born on May 28, 1937 in Harman, WV, and was the son of the late Kermit and Edith Nelson Blizzard. Richard was a devoted loving husband, father and grandfather. His passion in life was farming at his home place in West Virginia and driving tractor trailer for the family business. He graduated from Harman High School in Harman, WV, and was given the Farm Mechanics National Award from FFA. He worked for Walker Manufacturing for 25 years before retiring. In 1985, he co-founded Blizzard Transportation. He was a member of Harman Church of the Brethren and attended Garber’s Church of the Brethren. On his birthday he graduated from high school and also married his wife, Eunice Gail Smith Blizzard. He is survived by a son, Ricky David Blizzard and wife, Mary Ann of Harrisonburg, VA; four grandchildren, Shandi Dawn Blizzard and companion, Brandon Dofflemyer of Elkton, VA, Timothy Jacob Blizzard and wife Stephanie, of Harman, WV, Tracy Suters and husband, Joey, of Broadway, VA, Chad Rhodes and wife, Leilani, of Linville, VA; eight great-grandchildren, Sierra and Gage Kelley, Katelynn Viands and husband, Jarred, Bryce, Taylor and Jayce Suters, and Caiden and Cam Rhodes; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, who preceded him in death on December 25, 2015, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Dale Blizzard who died in 1990; a sister, Gae Marie Blizzard; and brothers, Robert and Samuel Blizzard. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 26, 2016 at Garber’s Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg, with Pastor Walt Crull officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday. Friends and family are welcome to attend a gathering 6-8 pm, Friday, August 26, at Harman Church of the Brethren. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 27, at the Blizzard family cemetery, 432 Blizzard Hollow, Harman, WV 26270. Memorial contributions may be made to Harrisonburg Fire Department or Harrisonburg Rescue Squad.
