Mary Hodnett Alexander, 80, a resident of Harrisonburg passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Sunnyside Retirement Community.
She was born in Alexander City, AL, on March 29, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Homer Gaines and Gertie Lee Thomas Hodnett.
Mary graduated from Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, AL and was a homemaker. In her early years, she was employed with the Turkish Embassy and the FBI. She attended Port Republic United Methodist Church and was a member of the ladies bridge club.
Mary was a loving mother and aunt, an avid gardener and enjoyed canning her own vegetables and loved spoiling her grandchildren.
On April 25, 1959 she married, Dr. Robert Bowman Alexander, who preceded her in death on February 7, 1991.
She is survived by a son, Robert Stephen Alexander and wife, Lisa, of Riva, Md., a daughter, Stephanie A. Berry and husband, Guylan, of Madison, Va., twin grandchildren, Zachary and Jenna Alexander, and granddaughter Alexis Berry; a twin brother, Cary Hodnett of Chattanooga, Tn., and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Harold and Paul Hodnett and a sister, Wanda Carson.
A funeral service will be at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Carl Ripley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service. Burial will be at Port Republic Cemetery. The casket will be closed.
