Obituary of Joseph Foch Gambill
Joseph Foch Gambill, 92, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was born in Harrisonburg on May 25, 1920 and was the son of the late Dr. John Randolph and Alice Filler Gambill. Joe graduated from Madison College and earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration at University of Virginia. He taught in Augusta County for 32 years before retiring in 1982. Joe was a member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church, Harrisonburg Elks Lodge, #450, Spotswood Country Club, and Harrisonburg VFW Post #632. He was a history buff and had spoken at JMU and been interviewed numerous times by WVPT, local newspapers, and local high school students regarding his involvement in WWII. He served in the US Army, Company C out of Harrisonburg, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division and was medically discharged after being wounded in France and obtaining the rank of Captain. On June 7, 1946, he married the former Catherine “Kitty” Anderson, who survives. He is also survived by a son, John A. “Andy” Gambill and wife, Kelle, of Magnolia, TX; a daughter, Jane G. Coffaro of Harrisonburg; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenton Gambill of Strasburg, and Dr. John Randolph Gambill of West Des Moines, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor, Hamilton and Emerson Gambill; two sisters, Aurelia Gambill and Florence Simon. A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 6, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Sam Jones officiating. The casket will be closed.
