Obituary of Dwight Earl Miller
Dwight Earl Miller, age 94, died on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Bridgewater Retirement Community. He was born November 5, 1929, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital to the late Dr. O. L. and Eunice Early Miller; their third son. Older brothers, Orland Lloyd Miller and Waldo Glen Miller predeceased him. His second spouse of 20 years, Barbara Stekl Miller, predeceased him in 2008. Surviving Dwight are four children of a previous marriage to Elizabeth Shank, Mark W. Miller of Harrisonburg, VA., Gwen E. Miller of Waynesboro VA., Peter Bryan Miller of Potomac, MD. and Ross W. Miller of Brentwood, TN. Also surviving are two stepchildren of his marriage to Barbara, Susan Fox Heath of Pinehurst NC., and Steven David Fox of Keswick, VA. There are eight grandchildren in the extended family, Bethany Jones Rose, Samantha Miller, Christian Miller, Lilly Miller, Katelyn Heath, Austin Fox, Carson Fox, and Colton Fox; and four great grandchildren, Asher, David, Milo, and Elizabeth Rose. Dwight, an eagle scout, attended Harrisonburg city schools, graduating in 1947 from Harrisonburg High School. His secondary education at VPI was interrupted by a 4-year contract as a Naval Aviator, during the Korean conflict. Returning to VPI&SU, he completed requirements for a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1959. He returned to Harrisonburg to achieve Virginia certification as an architect. In 1966, he established an architectural practice in Harrisonburg, later to be known as Miller Cupp Associates, Architects. He retired in 1999. Dwight and Barbara traveled extensively during their marriage, both nationally and internationally. They loved to sing and did so in Asbury United Methodist Church choirs for many years and as members of the Shenandoah Valley Choral Society. His service in the Choral Society became a primary interest, serving as president of the organization several times. He was a member of the Harrisonburg Rotary Club. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Bridgewater Retirement Community and took residence on that campus in 2010. A Requiem will be heard at Lantz Chapel on the campus of Bridgewater Retirement Community at which his family members will receive visitors on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 11:00 am.
