Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park
In loving memory of Jerry D. Smith. Born February 8, 1936 in Danville, VA and passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side, December 13, 2022 in Hampton, VA.
Jerry was a proud, honest and loving man. He was proud of his family and his country and loved both dearly.
He was faithfully and joyously married for 67 years to the love of his life, soulmate and best friend, Grace E. Smith. Together they could take on the world.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward D. Smith and wife Janet, Raymond A. Smith and wife Lisa. Grandsons Zachary M Smith and wife Tori, Cody E. Smith and wife Bridgette. Great grandchildren Carson Raymond, Ava Rose, Emma Grace and Hunter Marie.
Jerry entered the Air Force in 1954 during the Korean War at age 18, serving 10 years. He transferred to the Army in 1964 and retired in 1978, serving 24 years.
He volunteered for Vietnam at the end of 1965 spending a year in Phan Rhan province with the 62 engineers Battalion as Chief Surveyor.
Jerry was honestly open, like him or not! He said what he meant and meant what he said. He wouldn’t lie or sugarcoat anything. What you got was 100% Jerry D Smith. Those that knew him truly loved and honored him. RIP
In lieu of flowers the family has requested a donation to the American Cancer Society or Shriners Hospital.
