Obituary of Daniel Carl Muir
According to God's timing, Daniel Carl Muir, 73, died unexpectedly, Sunday, April 17, 2016, after fighting to survive an aortic aneurysm. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Feathers Muir; his son, Todd and wife Magun; granddaughters, Sarah and Chloe; his sister, Donna; and nieces, Lisa and Hattie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cowan and Doris Muir, and his special needs son, Jeffrey, who always brought out the best in Danny. He recovered from a brain aneurysm 10 years ago and had a renewed zest for life since his early retirement. A Hampton native, Danny graduated from Hampton High School (HHS) in 1961 where he met his high school sweetheart and lifelong companion, Patty, who he married in 1965. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the HHS Beta Club. Danny was a jack of all trades and master of many, an avid gardener, and an incredibly gifted woodworker. He knew no strangers, and particularly delighted in the wonderful neighbors that surround their home. He was known for his friendly conversations and frequent visits to discuss any topic known to man. Danny had a quick smile and an incredible sense of humor, telling jokes, stories, and fun facts that showed a glimpse into the brilliance of his mind. He was eager to help and teach, and was meticulous about many things, especially his own work. Danny was generous with his time, expertise, love and possessions, always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved spending time with his family, and especially his sons. His presence in this world and in our lives will be greatly missed! Danny’s 47 year career was with Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) where he was the consummate shipbuilder and mentor. He began in the Apprentice School as a toolmaker supporting submarine and carrier construction, beginning with the USS Enterprise and ended his career coaching designers and engineers building the state-of-the-art Gerald Ford. Along the way, Danny served as General Foreman, Manager of Planning, CNC Programming, Tool Engineering, and Superintendent of the Machine Shop. As a technical expert, he was without equal and the impact of his mentorship still lives today both as a teacher of trade and of life. Danny led by example and remains a personal compass for shipbuilders, his family, and all those he knew. The family wishes to thank their friends, neighbors, and church family for their prayers and expressions of concern during these difficult days. We also wish to thank the Norfolk General Vascular ICU medical staff for their professional expertise and compassionate care for Danny. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, Thursday, April 21st at 6 pm, with visitation from 5 to 6 pm. A private graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to specialolympicsva.org, Bethel Baptist Ministries, or to the charity of your choice.
