Verda Rae McCain passed away May 14, 2015 at her new home, 3140 S. Winsor Ave #7, in Yuma. She was a member of three pioneer Yuma families: George W. Crane, for whom Crane School is named, her great grandfather, Lt. Col. H.H. Donkersley, for whom the American Legion is named, her paternal grandfather and O.T. McCoon, who was instrumental in the development of Wellton Mohawk Valley, Gila Valley and the Unite B. area on the Yuma Mesa, her maternal grandfather.
Verda was born in Yuma on April 22, 1927, attended Roosevelt and Fourth Avenue Grammar Schools, graduated from Yuma Union High School in 1945 and attended the University of Arizona for two years.
She was an active volunteer in the Yuma Community. She served on the first United Fund Board, the Red Cross, Yuma Crossing Park Council, Chairman of Miss Yuma County Pageant, Yuma County Fair Board Member, served on the Excel Governing Board for nine years, and was twice nominated for Yuma County Citizen of the Year.
As a member of the Yuma Mesa Homemakers, she was co-chair of the ""Pie-Booth"" at the Yuma County Fair, and was a member and past president of the Junior Women's Club and was a 44 year member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter Q and a member of the DAR.
Verda is survived by her sons, Lee McCain (Eline) of Yuma and Deryl McCain of Lander, WY; granddaughter, Amy Karvoski (Chris) of Yuma; grandson, Don Austin McCain (Amanda) of Las Vegas; great granddaughters, Dru Marie Karvoski and Mina Rae McCain; great grandson, Trent Arlen Karvoski; her sister-in-law, Maxine Dick of Yuma; and her loving extended family, Chuy, Carolina, Jr., Linda and Adrian Ontiveros.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don C. McCain their daughter Dru Ann McCain and her parents, Lee and Verda Donkersley. Verda will be missed. The family would like to thank Tina and Hospice of Yuma for their considerate kind care.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2015 with Phil Clark presiding at, Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1415 S. 1st Avenue, Yuma. In lieu of flowers, Verda requested that donations be made to the Faith Mckee Fund Chapter Q, PEO Sisterhood c/o Eline McCain 5241 E. Goldwater Dr, Yuma, AZ 85365.
