Bob was born on the 16th of August, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri. He moved to Yuma, AZ at the age of 5 with his father Ray, mother Ila, and brother Lonnie. Many stories were told of the trip across county in the summer of 1951 in a car with no air conditioning. As a boy, he played “cowboys” with friends on the mesa bluffs and baseball with his brother and friends any chance he got. He grew into an outstanding player and pitched at Yuma High School, Arizona Western College, and Northern Arizona University.
Bob went onto become a collegiate pitching coach at his alma maters & earned a Bachelor of Science & Master of Arts. He worked for the parks and recreation department in Flagstaff and Yuma but spent a majority of his career at YPG from 1990 – 2013.
Bob was a loving husband and father. He met and married his first wife Patty in 1970 in Flagstaff, AZ. Their daughter Tammi was born in 1972. Though they divorced in 1974, they remained friendly and Tammi has always been a part of his life. He met and married his 2nd wife Sharon in 1975. Their son Chad was born in 1976 followed by their daughter Courtney in 1978.
Bob remained active in athletics. He mentored his children in sports and instilled a sense of competitiveness, fairness, and handwork. He relished a good game of cards, cribbage, or dominos. Many fun evenings with friends and family were spent around the game table.
Bob thoroughly enjoyed fantasy football and eagerly anticipated weekly meetings. Nothing made him happier than being in charge of the league. He was proud to brag about it being the longest running league in Yuma and gave an infamous “Big Daddy” speech every year.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, daughter Tammi, son Chad, daughter Courtney, and 7 grandchildren (Grant, Carter, McKenna, Taylor, Bryce, Kelley, and Ash.) A service will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on July 29th at 5:00 pm.
