Larry was born on October 25, 1943, in Logansport, Indiana. He grew up in Indianapolis and attended high school at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee where he was on multiple leadership councils, the 2nd highest ranking officer in the Corps, and the captain of the swimming team. He went on to attend Indiana University for both undergraduate and law degrees before joining the Marine Corps as a Jag officer posted at MCAS Yuma.
As one of the first JAG officers in Yuma, he was not warmly received by the upper-level offices who were accustomed to dispensing discipline themselves based upon their own interpretation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. As a result, he said that he spent most of his time in the officers' club with the doctors and helicopter pilots.
When Larry left the Marine Corps, he joined the Rolle Benton Cole law firm in Yuma and was admitted to the Arizona and California bars. After establishing his own private practice, he was very active in the State Bar of Arizona serving on multiple committees and as president. He was well known and respected in the law community. Larry loved Corvettes and was particularly fond of his '59 which he owned for 50 years. He was also an accomplished pilot and logged several thousand hours in his beloved Beechcraft Bonanza.
Larry died on December 1, 2024 after a protracted illness. He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Robyn, brother Tom (Geralyn), brother-in-law Kelly Watkins (Tina), sister-in-law Maryann Watkins, nephews and nieces Scott, Kim, Rhett, Callan, Clay and Courtney (Eric). He was preceded in death by his parents Vic and Betty. Larry will be greatly missed.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at 1:00 PM at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1415 S. 1st Ave in Yuma, AZ. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Humane Society of Yuma, Hospice of Yuma or the Hansen House.
