Long time Yuma resident Douglas Conrad Borg passed away at home on Friday, July 22, 2011. Doug was born in Rochester, Minnesota on August 15, 1921.
He grew up in Rochester where he graduated from Rochester High School. It was at Rochester High School that he met his wife Elaine. In January of this year Doug and Elaine celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary. Doug attended the University of Minnesota where his education was interrupted by World War II.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in both World War II and the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army in 1951 Doug and Elaine came to Yuma where they purchased "Western Fashions" and operated it for 34 years. He enjoyed donating and presenting the Silver Spurs each year at the Silver Spur Rodeo. He retired in 1985.
Doug was a member of the Elks Club, the Yuma County Sheriffs Posse, and the Yuma Jaycees. He was a member of the Yuma Golf and Country Club where he served a term as President in 1989-90. He was also a founding member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Doug was an avid golfer, after retirement he and Elaine combined their love of travel and golf. He also enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
Doug is survived by his daughters, Diane (Robert) Harding of Eagle, ID, Deborah (Gordie) Rivera of Yuma; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 7 nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his parents; Fred and Cindie Borg and his brother Frank.
Private services have been held with final resting at Desert Lawn Cemetery in Yuma.
