Walter Lewis Scales, 85, of Yucaipa, California, passed away peacefully at Redlands Community Hospital on Sunday October 15, 2017. Walter lived a full life with a focus to service for his country, family, and those in need. Born on July 19, 1932 to Frank and Louise Scales, Walter grew up around Cambridge, Massachusetts, with eight brothers and two sisters. In his teen and high school years, he helped care for the blind at his grandmother’s board and care home, his dying aunt Mary Hamilton and her two adopted children. Walter then served in the Korean war as a psychiatric army medic. Walter subsequently obtained his master’s degree in social work from San Diego State University which he applied to various positions in Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, the Office on Aging, Hospice Care, Nursing Home Care, and counselling emotionally disturbed children through various private youth agencies. Walter resided in the Inland Empire for over 35 years and in Yucaipa for the past twelve years where he proudly applied his passion for signing in numerous church choirs with his beautiful tenor voice.
Walter is survived by his devoted wife Diane Scales; previous wife Virginia Pong; son Shann Scales; daughter Niaolei Scales; grandchildren Jessica Scales, Bradlee Scales; great grandchildren Walter Scales, Vincent Scales; brothers Frank Scales, Rodger Scales, Richard Scales, Ralph Scales, Kenny Scales; Sisters Marion Freeman, Linda Vasquez; step sons Bill Theurer, Scott Fandrick, Daniel Fandrick, Keith Fandrick; and seven step grandchildren.
