Darrel Dean Derksen died August 25, 2023. He was 77 years old. He had been ill with congestive heart failure and diabetes. Now he kneels before his Savior, thanking him for his grace and merciful salvation. How long will he kneel before the throne but that he jumps up to join the music sung by the choir!?!
Born on October 16, 1945 to Clarence and Esther Derksen, he grew up on a southern Minnesota farm. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Penner and last month they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. They have three boys, Jared, Michael, and James. He spent the first part of his adult life as a pastor in a variety of California churches. Later he transitioned to teaching elementary school in the city of San Bernardino. He loved second graders and always watched for them.
He was a devoted follower of Christ and at 7 years of age, frightened by a thunder storm, his mother led him to place his faith in Christ. A faithful member at Trinity EV Free Redlands for the last 27 years, his place in church was the front row, soaking up the music and good Bible preaching. He loved spending time in his workshop where he handcrafted speciality pens. His grandkids were always welcome in the shop and you never knew what crazy project would end up finding a new home. He could fix anything. Coming into the kitchen after a nap, he would say, "I think I have a way to put together.....
Darrel loved Nascar and even worked on a pit crew for a friend in the 80’s.
He was never without a dog, always a Pomeranian until his last one, Lucy. The kids told him the name of the new dog could not be Chauncey Again, so there was Nikki and now Lucy.
An avid conversationalist, Darrel was always ready with a question. Or two. Or ten. He was always fascinated with the people he met and was delighted to discover each person’s unique story and abilities. He had a way of engaging people that brought out the best in them. Fearlessly making friends of complete strangers.
He is survived by his wife, his sons Jared (Jennifer), Michael (Tina), James, and grandchildren, Blake (Meagan), Victoria (Sam), Jacob, Finn, Caitlin, and Gavin.
Celebration of life will be held at Trinity EV Free Redlands on Friday, September 8, 2:00pm. Darrel’s favorite color was purple. You’re welcome to add some purple to your attire as a tribute.
