Russell Edward Winegardner was born in Warren, Pennsylvania on May 17, 1950. He passed away on March 25th, 2024. Russell was born to the Hinsdale family, but at age 2, was adopted by Bernard and Effie Winegardner. He adored his parents and was grateful for his adoption. Russ always said he was adopted twice, once by his family and once by God. Russ was a Vietnam Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at the Naval Hospital in New York where he found his love of medicine.
Russ worked as a respiratory therapist for 42 years. He loved his job. Although this was his full-time job, God called him into ministry at age 50. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Ministerial Studies at the Church on the Rock. He then became a marriage counselor at the church and worked with a men’s group. He loved the Lord and believed in the power of His word. He was proud to have officiated two of his grandsons wedding and they were happy to have him bless their day.
Russ was united in marriage to Kathy on June 28, 1986. They both lived in Denair. Russ brought a daughter Erin, whom he loved dearly, to the marriage and Kathy brought two sons; Scott and Brian whom he loved like they were his own. They have celebrated 37 years together. They traveled all over the United States and shared many great adventures.
Russ loved the Rolling Stones and Christian rock music. You could find him watching Formula One and NASCAR with anyone willing to sit and watch with him. Russ was an amazing storyteller and could easily captivate a room- he made you want to be around him. He was charismatic and filled the room with his smile and a glint in his eyes. He was often mistaken for Santa in December by the kids; but he just played along and asked what they wanted for Christmas. He always showed he cared. He was a great supporter of every person he touched. His kindness rubbed off on the people around him Russ never knew a stranger; he would talk to anyone.
Russ is survived by his wife Kathy, sister Beryl, daughter Erin and son in law Justin, son Scott and daughter in law Kristine and son Brian, and daughter in law Mindy. Seven grandchildren: Bryce, Chris, Ryan, Hayley, Mattie, Mariah, and Jaycee. Four great grandchildren: Emma, Beau, Hazel, and Braxon. His family was his world, and he was the world to his family.
Russ will be laid to rest Friday, April 26, 2024, 11:00am at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona 23029 N.Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024. His Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024, 11:00 am at Sun City West Christian Church.
