Sr. Marita Paul Hammond, F.S.P. died on Thursday August 28, 2014 at Calvary Hospital at age 88. She was born on December 14, 1925 to Clarence and Anna (Burke) Hammond in N.Y.C. She was a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Peace in Haverstraw. She attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in NYC and received her BA in English from Ladycliff College and her Masters from Fordham University. She professed her first vows on July 11, 1945 and her final vows on July 11, 1950. Sr. Marita started as a teacher at Assumption School in Peekskill, then became the child care worker at Lt. Joseph Kennedy Home in the Bronx from 1949 to 1960. She then received permanent certification as a social worker and was assigned to St. Joseph’s home in Peekskill (1960 -67) and became executive director from 1967 to 1980. In 1980, she became co-founder and director of Nazareth Life Center in Garrison until 2009, when she retired to Marion Woods in Hartsdale. Sister was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and received the Humanitarian Award in Support of Life by the Knights of Columbus in 1990. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Paul Hammond. Visiting hours will be at the Marion Woods Convent, 152 Ridge St., Hartsdale on Monday September 1st from 3 to 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Marion Woods on Tuesday September 2nd at 10am. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery.
