She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Coaxum, parents Aaron and Sarah Alice Salley Land, her sister Mildred Land Whittle, her brother Spot Land and grandson Courtney Hollinsworth. Her surviving sister is Ann Green of Yonkers N.Y. She is survived by her son Antonio Victor Coaxum (and Hope), granddaughter Nicole Chandler (and Calvin) and one great grandson, Malakhi C. Chandler. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Mary was born in Mecklenburg County VA on March 31st 1942 to Aaron and Sarah Land. As a young woman she met and later married Henry Coaxum on September 21st 1963 and raised their son, Antonio, in Yonkers N.Y. Mary worked for the Yonkers Public School system for 40+ years. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Messiah Baptist Church of Yonkers N.Y. Mary was a beloved member of her community and adored by many. Her desire for life and love for those around her was evident whenever in her presence. She was giving, caring and exuded a heart of goal. Her passion was gardening, and she loved to cook and bake for family and friends alike. Mary Alice Coaxum affectionately referred to as “Bird”, will be missed immensely by her family, a host of nephews and nieces and those who truly knew her best. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Thursday 9-11am with a funeral service to follow at 11am. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery.
