Maria Lina Thomas, aged 91, of Yonkers, NY passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 27, 2020. She was born a welcome surprise to Wilma Schall and Hermann Dettmers in Bremen, Germany, on her mother’s birthday.
Arriving in the United States at the age of 3, Maria spent the beginning of her childhood in New York City, NY before moving to Yonkers, NY with her family at the age of 16, where she chose to reside for the remainder of her life. After secretarial school she worked as a legal secretary for law firms in Yonkers and Bronxville, NY. She fell in love with Alfred Thomas, who she married in June of 1952, and the couple went on to have two children: Lisa and Alfred.
Throughout her life Maria enjoyed quilting, playing piano, crypto-quotes, relaxing in Hawaii, hiking, and winning at Scrabble – both in English and German.
She is survived by her children Alfred and Lisa; Lisa’s husband Michael and their three children, Amy, Ryan, and William; and her brother Kurt’s loving family, although Kurt himself is sadly no longer with us. She will be remembered with love.
Mit inniger Liebe und grosser Traurigkeit im Herzen nehmen wir Abschied von unsere Momi, Omi und Freundin.
