Jim was born on July 22, 1936 to James McCabe and Catherine (Harney) McCabe. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, NY, and received a bachelor's degree from Iona College. He was married to his high school sweetheart Anne (Kathryn) Nevin on May 16, 1959. Jim joined the Navy at age 18 in July of 1954, and served until his honorable discharge in July of 1957. Afterward, he returned to Yonkers where he worked at Phelps Dodge Corp as a machine operator. He was appointed to the Yonkers Police department on January 1, 1962. Jim was very active on the PBA board of trustees and in 1978 was the PBA’s Vice President. He served on the committee for the Old Timers Picnic for many years. Jim enjoyed coaching and playing on the PBA softball team. Jim was a member of the Holy Name Society, the VFW, American Legion, Elks Club and he attended Sacred Heart parish in Yonkers, NY and St Jerome’s in Largo, FL. In the 1970’s Jim was an integral part of the Employee Assistance Program for Yonkers, counseling those dealing with alcoholism and affecting many lives around in the process. He retired on January 14, 1983 and continued to work in the EAP. He went on to found JRW Institute of Addiction Studies where he continued to counsel those in need, as well as providing drunk driving prevention programs and defensive driver programs. He also ran an accredited CASAC training program. He retired in 2012. Jim had a passion for life and laughter, family and friends, Giants and Mets (and later the Rays). Jim loved big breakfast, ice cream, and napping in his recliner while watching Fox News. If you knew him, you loved him. His laugh was infectious, he had many “wise” sayings, and he most certainly would have told you to “behave yourself” at some point. He is survived by a close family that will miss him dearly. His loving children; Thomas McCabe, Tara (Andrew) Parness, and Eileen McCabe. His adoring grandchildren; Patrick (Marielis) McCabe, Dr. Kelly (Sean Hawthorne) Parness, Allison Parness, and Andrea Parness. His joys - his great grandchildren; Liam and Jaxson McCabe. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews with whom he was very close. He was predeceased by his wife Anne, his son Detective James McCabe YPD, and sisters Katherine Huntley and Joan Doyle. A gathering and celebration of life will be held at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Tuesday 4-8pm. A memorial mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday June 2nd at 11am. Inurnment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery.
