Helen M. Higgins (nee Cronin), a resident of Bluffton, SC, formerly of Yonkers died on Wednesday October 7, 2015. She was 94 years old. She was born in Yonkers on May 2, 1921, one of six children born to Henry & Ellen Fedor Cronin. She was raised and educated in Yonkers and graduated from Commerce High School in 1939. Helen was a good Catholic and a member of Christ the King Parish. For a time, she was employed by both the church and the school, preparing menus and making meals for the priests and nuns. She laundered the priest’s garments worn at mass which had to be laundered in a meticulous manner. She was also employed as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home. Helen loved to sing and as a young woman, she was part of a group along with her sister Dolores, called the Harmony Trio, singing at shows. She actually met her husband during a show. She also enjoyed dancing, reading and movies. On June 26, 1943, she married her loving husband Edward S. Higgins in Sacred Heart Church. Mr. Higgins passed away in 1973. Helen is survived by two daughters, Joan and Patricia, a grandson Anthony and a great grandchild. She was predeceased by her siblings, Harry, Lillian, Frances, Marion and Dolores and a granddaughter, Dawn Marie. Her family said “She was a loving, dedicated housewife and mother. She was a selfless person who put the needs and wants of others before herself”. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Wednesday October 28th 4-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Christ the King Church on Thursday October 29th at 10am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
