Fr. Zachary Grant O.F.M. CAP.

The Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother, Father Zachary Grant who passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY at the age of 82.

Born on 21 June 1930 in the Bronx, NY, he attended St. Benedict School, Bronx; St. Teresa School, Brooklyn, NY and St. Mary’s Seraphicate in Garrison, NY. He entered the Capuchins in 1948; professed final vows in 1953 and was ordained to the priesthood on 23 June 1956.

Fr. Zachary ministered in Spanish-speaking parishes as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady Queen of Angels, Manhattan; missionary to Honduras, Central America; and assistant at Our Lady of Montserrat in Stamford, CT.

He also served as assistant and later rector of St. Francis Chapel, Springfield, MA; Provincial Director of the Secular Franciscan fraternities; and guardian of St. Lawrence Friary in Abington, MA.

Fr. Zachary began his study of Portuguese at the age of 70 and ministered with the Cape Verdean community in the Archdiocese of Boston, residing at St. Benedict the Moor Friary in Roxbury, MA.

In 2009, Fr. Zachary joined the senior friar community of St. Clare in Yonkers, NY and later began his residency at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Fr. Zachary was survived by two sisters Leticia [Lettie] Grant-Cole of Hendersonville, NC and Anne Grant-Walsh of Farmingdale, New York and their families.

A wake service will be held at St. Clare Friary-110 Shonnard Place-Yonkers, NY on Monday, 03 December 2012 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church-110 Shonnard Place-Yonkers, NY on Tuesday 04 December 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
