The Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother Father George Maddock, O.F.M. Cap. who died on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY at the age of 81.
Father George was born in St. Albans, NY to Clinton and Grace Dunn-Maddock on January 22, 1937. George grew up in the presence of five siblings: Valerie, John, Joseph, Mary Rose and Eileen.
He attended St. Paschal Baylon Grade School, St. Albans [1943-1951] and St. Mary H. S. Seminary, Garrison, NY [1951-55].
Father George entered the Capuchin Franciscans at St. Lawrence Friary, Milton, MA on August 31, 1955 and received the religious name Paschal. He was simply professed on September 1, 1956 and pronounced perpetual vows at St. Anthony Friary, Hudson, NY on September 1, 1959 where he earned a BA in Philosophy [1960]. Father attended Mary Immaculate School of Theology, Garrison, NY earning a Master’s in Divinity [1964] and ordained to the priesthood at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY on January 11, 1964.
Following his Ordination, Father was assigned to the Mariana Islands. He taught at Fr. Duenas Memorial High School [1965-1975]; served as principal for two years; director of the minor seminary for three years and ministered as the Superior Regular of the mission for six of those years.
He was pastor of St. Francis of Assisi, Yona, [1975-1988] where he also taught in the parish school.
In 1984 Fr. George was sent to Hawaii to begin the expansion of the Capuchins in the Diocese of Honolulu. In Hawaii he served as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Ewa Beach [1984-1988] and also taught in the parish school. He also ministered as pastor of St. Elizabeth, Aiea [1988-1993]. Fr. George was appointed Director of Post-Novitiate Formation with residence at St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Kaneohe [1993-95].
Fr. George returned to Guam in 1995 and resided at St. Fidelis Friary, Agaña Heights and held a variety of positions including Director of Post Novitiate Formation [1995-1997]; Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Agaña Heights [1997-1998]; Teacher and Vice Principal at Father Duenas Memorial High School [1998-2004] and parochial and friary assistant [2004-2013]. Due to declining health Father retired in 2013. He returned to the States in 2018 and resided at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY and later Cabrini Westchester, Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Fr. George Maddock was predeceased by his father and mother; his older sister Valerie and his younger sister Mary Rose. He was survived by his older brother John [Palm Beach Grove, FL]; his younger brother Joseph [Ithaca, NY] and his younger sister Eileen [New Hyde Park, NY].
Viewing will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. There will be a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, New York at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at the Province of St. Mary Cemetery, Yonkers, NY. Following the internment, a luncheon will be served in the Sacred Heart Friary dining room.
